Mumbai Doctor Physically Assaulted at Sion Hospital, Days After Kolkata Rape-Murder Case

A female doctor in Mumbai's Sion Hospital was physically assaulted in the early hours of morning today by 5-6 intoxicated patient attendants.

Mumbai: In a shocking case of physical assault, a doctor in Mumbai's Sion Hospital was physically assaulted early morning today.

This incident comes days after the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. 

Doctor Physically Assaulted at Mumbai's Sion Hospital

There has been an incidence of Violence in Sion hospital that occurred early this morning, on August 18, involving one of the on-call residents in the ward. 

A group of 5-6 intoxicated patient attendants threatened and attempted to physically assault the resident doctor at around 3:30 am. 

She also sustained injuries while defending herself.

Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors Condemns Incident

While there is no statement that has been issued by the hospital in question, the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has condemned the incident and has given a statement on the same.

BMC MARD says, “This alarming incident highlights a significant security failure. Our doctor's safety is non-negotiable. This situation requires immediate attention and implementation of strict security measures in all hospitals.”

Victim Files Police Complaint, Accused Absconding

The female resident doctor is currently at Sion Police Station giving her statement and process to register Institutional FIR is underway. Doctors from BMC MARD Association present at Sion Police Station.

The accused, patient's attendants have run away from the hospital, are absconding after the incident.

Incident Comes Days After Kolkata Horror

The incident of assault on a female doctor comes days after the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata.

On the night of August 9, the 31-year-old trainee doctor ‘Abhaya’ had completed her 36-hour long shift and had gone to the seminar room to take rest when she was attacked.

The woman was brutally raped, gravely injured and then murdered at her workplace; the accused, Sanjoy Roy has been arrested and the case is being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The Kolkata Horror has sparked massive outrage across the country leading to suspension of medical services by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), a political blame-game and protests in multiple states, demanding ‘Justice for Abhaya’.
