UPI Outage Disrupts Payments Across India – PhonePe, Paytm Users Struggle
UPI is down for several users across India. PhonePe, Paytm , and Google Pay stopped functioning on Wednesday evening.
UPI Down: Unified Payment Interface (UPI) is down for several users across India. The disruption led to numerous complaints from users attempting to make digital payments through various UPI-supported apps like Google Pay, Paytm , and the State Bank of India’s platform.
UPI Down: Complaints Surge on DownDetector
According to DownDetector, a website that tracks technical issues, there were 2,750 complaints about the UPI disruption by 7:50 PM. Google Pay users accounted for 296 of these complaints, while Paytm users filed 119 reports. The State Bank of India ( SBI ) also saw 376 complaints, with most related to issues with funds transfer and online banking services.
Users took to social media to express frustration over the UPI outage. One user tweeted, “For the first time in my life, I've experienced UPI downtime. Not banks, or gateways, but @UPI_NPCI itself. Uptime was 100% in February."
Another user posted, “What is this nonsense? UPI not working. My money is debited but not credited to my friend's account @UPI_NPCI.”
Several other users reported failed transactions across multiple platforms, including Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. “Is there any problem with UPI right now? I tried payments through Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, but the payments are getting failed,” one user said.
UPI Down: UPI Transactions in January
Despite the recent technical glitch, UPI transactions had seen significant growth in recent months. In January 2025, UPI transactions surpassed 16.99 billion, with a total value exceeding ₹23.48 lakh crore.
It accounted for 80 percent of retail payments in India, demonstrating its importance in daily financial transactions.
UPI Down: Shift in UPI Transaction Trends
In the fiscal year 2024-2025, UPI’s People to Merchant (P2M) transactions made up 62.35 percent of the overall volume, while People to People (P2P) transactions contributed 37.65 percent.
In December 2024, UPI transactions also reached a record 16.73 billion, reflecting an 8 percent increase compared to the previous month, further solidifying UPI's role as a leading payment method in the country.
