New Delhi: After remaining out of bound for flyers for nearly two months, the Delhi Airport's Terminal 1 began operations from Saturday, August 17. The operationalization of the T1 will enhance the passengers conveniences as the services which were shifted to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 will be accessible from this Terminal once again.

Flight operations at Terminal 1 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) had been suspended in June due to a canopy collapse incident which had claimed a life and left many injured.

Following the closure of the T1 over safety reasons, IndiGo and SpiceJet had shifted their operations to Terminal 2 and 3. This will reduce the pressure on the two terminals and T1 gets back to service with upgraded facilities. The closure of Terminal-1 had led to a significant increase in passenger traffic at Terminals 2 and 3.

Taking to Twitter, the Delhi airport wrote, "The #NewT1 at #DelhiAirport is ready for operations. With state-of-the-art facilities and enhanced passenger convenience, we’re all set to welcome you to a #FutureReady travel experience."

Around 1,400 flights operate daily from all three terminals of IGI. The majority of these flights are operated from Terminals 2 and 3. Domestic flights by IndiGo and SpiceJet are operated from Terminal 1.

According to an official release, the new terminal was developed as part of the Phase 3A expansion project by DIAL.

IndiGo to shift operations from September 2

In a statement issued on August 14, the DIAL said, “As per the plan, SpiceJet would shift their 13 flights to Terminal 1 from August 17 and subsequently IndiGo would move back their 34 flights from T2 and T3 to T1, from September 2,” .

As per the plans, all SpiceJet passengers will be required to enter through Entry Gate A on the ground floor, while IndiGo passengers can enter through Entry Gates 5 and 6 on the first floor. All passenger arrivals will take place through dedicated arrival areas on the ground floor.

DIAL has placed signage at strategic locations, including on-road markings, to guide IndiGo and SpiceJet passengers to the departures area. Additionally, RAXA guards will be deployed to assist passengers and direct them to the appropriate departure points. For arrivals, passengers will take the same route to exit the terminal, as per the release.
