Amid abysmal visibility and consistent rise in the AQI levels in the national capital, Delhi has become a hotbed of increasing respiratory diseases across age groups. Prompting the authorities to act swiftly, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal held an emergency meeting announcing the implementation of Odd Even scheme from November 13 till November 20. Having been wrapped in a toxic haze of pollution, Delhi has been witnessing an 'air emergency' for the fifth consecutive day. In addition to this, closure of schools barring no physical classes except for Class 10 & 12 has been ordered by the Delhi government. On Sunday, the GRAP Stage-4 which falls under 'Severe+’ Air Quality (Delhi’s AQI > 450), was also invoked by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in the entire NCR region with immediate effect.

Delhi LG undertakes checks on pollution preparedness

In view of the alarming situation, Delhi LG, VK Saxena took to the streets to take stock of the pollution mitigating measures being undertaken by the various departments, agencies and civic bodies in the National Capital.

The LG walked on foot from the stretch behind Red Fort - Rajghat - ITO - Pragati Power Plant - IP Estate - Millennium Park near Sarai Kale Khan on the Ring Road, and inspected the pavements, footpaths. He further walked and took stock of central verges and the yards of the Power Plant and Millennium Bus Depot, which causes much of dust pollution leading up to higher PM 2.5/10 levels.

During the check, the LG found that the pavements and footpaths were covered with thick layers of dust and loose silt at several places which in turn led to more trouble by contributing to the dust pollution in the city. On his visit, he also directed the Transport Department and Delhi Police to strictly ensure that vehicles prohibited under GRAP-IV are not allowed on the roads.  At the same time, strict enforcement was told to be maintained on border points to check the entry of polluting vehicles entering Delhi from other States.

LG instructed accompanying officials of PWD, MCD, DDA, etc. to immediately ensure covering of the footpaths and ensuring remedial measures to keep the yards of the Power Plant and the Bus Depot dust-free.
