New Delhi: Delhiites woke up to a humid Monday morning with the minimum temperature settling at 28.4 degrees Celsius, 0.5 notches above the season's average. There was no rainfall recorded in the last 24 hours even as the weather department has forecast a cloudy sky with the possibility of heavy rains for the day. The maximum temperature is expected to settle at 33 degrees Celsius.
The national capital on Saturday reported six rain-related deaths, taking to 11 the toll in the first two days since Monsoon hit the city, even as authorities said they have taken strong measures to prevent waterlogging in the coming days when heavy rains have been forecast. Two boys drowned in a waterlogged underpass in northwest Delhi's Badli on Saturday, police said, adding the stretch was flooded following heavy rains the previous day.
Compensation of Rs 10 Lakhs Each to Delhi Rain Victims
In the aftermath of the torrential rains that occurred in parts of Delhi-NCR on June 28, Delhi Water Minister and AAP leader Atishi, on Sunday, announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakhs each to the families of Delhi rain victims.
The Water Minister, who was recently on an indefinite hunger strike demanding the release of Delhi's share of water from Haryana, took to X to write, “Several deaths have been reported on 28th June, after extreme rainfall of 228mm in 24 hours. The families of all those who lost their lives will be given a compensation of ₹10 lakhs. Directions have been given that this compensation reaches the grieving families speedily.”
The IMD has predicted heavy rains in Delhi and has put the city on "orange alert" till July 2.
On Friday, Delhi recorded 228 mm of rainfall which brought the city to a standstill. The torrential rainfall claimed many lives and led to severe waterlogging. The three-hour downpour led to the roof of Delhi Airport’s Terminal-1 collapsing, killing one person, suspending flight operations, and inundating many parts of the capital. The rain claimed at least one more life with a 39-year-old man electrocuted in the Rohini area. Besides, three labourers were trapped and later died when an under-construction wall in Vasant Vihar collapsed.
