New Delhi: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party staged a protest today against the Union Government, accusing it of neglecting Tamil Nadu in the recent Union Budget.

The demonstration, led by DMK leaders, took place outside the state assembly in Chennai. Party members held banners and shouted slogans demanding increased financial allocations and equitable treatment for Tamil Nadu.

DMK President M.K. Stalin, addressing the protesters, criticized the Centre for its budgetary decisions. "The Union Budget has once again ignored the needs of Tamil Nadu," he said.

“The allocation for our state is woefully inadequate considering the population and the economic contributions of Tamil Nadu,” he added.

Skipping the NITI Aayog meeting being held in Delhi, Stalin said, "Vanakkam! I was supposed to attend the 'NITI Aayog' meeting currently being held in Delhi, chaired by the Prime Minister. However, I am compelled to speak before you, in the people's forum, seeking justice due to the discriminatory attitude towards Tamil Nadu reflected in Union Budget 2024."

On Thursday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin was the first opposition leader to announce the boycott of NITI Aayog's meeting. Following his announcement, many leaders from the India Bloc said they would also skip the meeting.

Stalin further emphasized the disparity, stating, "It is evident that the Central Government does not value Tamil Nadu's contribution to the nation. We will continue to fight for our rightful share and ensure that our voice is heard."

Several other DMK leaders also spoke during the protest, echoing Stalin's sentiments and calling for immediate redress. They highlighted various sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, and education, which they believe have been underfunded in the budget.

The protest drew significant attention from the media and public, as the DMK seeks to pressure the Central Government into addressing their grievances. The party has indicated that it will continue its demonstrations until their demands are met.

The Centre has yet to respond to the allegations and demands made by the DMK.
