New Delhi: The Art of Living International Center in Bengaluru became the epicenter of a historic event this Maha Shivaratri as Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar unveiled the relics of the original Somnath Jyotirlinga, a sacred artifact believed to have been lost to history for over a thousand years.

The rare and divine revelation was witnessed by millions of seekers in 180 countries, both in person and online.

A Spiritual Fervor at Vishalakshi Mantap

The occasion unfolded at the Vishalakshi Mantap, where thousands gathered to observe this monumental event.

The event was also attended by Union Minister of State for Law and Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal.

Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, in his address, emphasized the deep spiritual essence of Shiva, encouraging seekers to experience the divine energy of the occasion. “Shiva is the essence of all that is, was, and will be,” Gurudev said. “On this Shivaratri, surrender, and feel one with the entire existence. Lord Shiva embraces you as you are.”

He spoke of the five attributes of Shiva- to create, maintain, transform, bless and hide. "Shivratri is when we feel the blessings and experience the divine energy. We simply soak in these vibrations and go deep within," Gurudev shared.

The Unveiling of the Sacred Relics

The highlight of the night was the unveiling of the ancient relics of the Somnath Jyotirlinga, believed to be the first among the 12 revered Jyotirlingas. This sacred relic was said to have the unique ability to levitate, a mystery that has intrigued generations.

The original Somnath temple and its Jyotirlinga were destroyed by Mahmud of Ghazni centuries ago. However, fragments of the sacred Jyotirlinga were secretly preserved and passed down through generations of Brahmins.

These fragments were safeguarded for over a thousand years until they were handed over to Gurudev in January 2025, following divine guidance from the Kanchi Shankaracharya.

“The rediscovery of these sacred fragments is not just about reclaiming history; it is about reviving the spirit of our civilization,” said Gurudev. “This moment reaffirms the eternal nature of Sanatan Dharma—it is a living tradition that continues to thrive.”

A Divine Night of Rituals and Music

As midnight approached, the atmosphere at the Bengaluru Ashram was charged with spiritual energy.

The sound of "Om Namah Shivaya" echoed across the center as Gurudev led a powerful meditation session. The night also featured Vedic rituals, including the chanting of Rudram, and devotional music that resonated deeply with the attendees.

In addition to traditional hymns, Grammy-nominated artist Raja Kumari performed devotional compositions, while indie bands such as Sadho-The Band, Abhanga Repost, and Nirvana Station infused a fresh, modern energy into the age-old bhakti music.

These artists reimagined Indian devotional music for today’s youth, bridging the gap between tradition and contemporary music culture.

A Global Celebration of Devotion

The day began with lakhs of devotees offering abhishekam at the Shiva temple within the Ashram, followed by the distribution of Mahaprasadam to all those present.

The unveiling of the Somnath Jyotirlinga relics, with their eventual reinstallation at Somnath, underscored the enduring power of Sanatan Dharma. As the night drew to a close, devotees basked in the grace of Shiva consciousness, reaffirming their faith and gratitude to the divine presence that transcends time and space.

The Maha Shivaratri celebrations at The Art of Living International Center were, indeed, a night to remember, a celebration of devotion, faith, and the timeless power of spiritual tradition.
