New Delhi: Hyderabad is experiencing rise in infections related to seasonal flu and influenza, as reported by doctors, immunologists and public health specialists. Over the past week, a worrying increase in cases have sparked concerns of a potential viral outbreak within the community.

The rise in infections has raised alarms among caregivers and healthcare providers alike, who fear it could be a precursor to a broader wave of upper respiratory ailments, including severe pneumonia. Last year in March 2023, Hyderabad experienced a notable surge in influenza cases, including strains such as H1N1 and H3N2, as confirmed by data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Infection affecting upper and lower respiratory tracts

Hospitals across Hyderabad are witnessing a surge in patients presenting with symptoms of seasonal flu. In some cases, the infection has progressed to affect the upper and lower respiratory tracts, including the lungs. This escalation has led to an increased demand for antiviral medications like Oseltamivir, commonly known as Tamiflu, particularly among patients with underlying health conditions.

Dr. Vyakaranam Nageshwar, a senior immunologist in Hyderabad, expressed concern over the recent spike in infections, attributing it to immunological changes exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasized the need for caution to prevent a potential surge in severe respiratory infections.

Contrary to widespread concerns, officials from the Fever Hospital, Nallakunta, a key healthcare facility for seasonal ailments, reported a relatively stable situation with only sporadic cases of seasonal flu and dengue so far. Dr. K Shankar, the hospital's superintendent, urged the public to maintain healthy habits and seek medical attention promptly if experiencing flu-like symptoms.

As weather conditions in Hyderabad remain conducive to the spread of viral and bacterial infections, authorities have issued a government advisory urging residents to take preventive measures. These include frequent handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and using disposable tissues when coughing or sneezing.

For anyone experiencing flu symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, and body aches, seeking medical advice promptly is advised, especially if symptoms persist for more than three days. The advisory also recommends calling emergency services if faced with a health emergency.
