IMD Predicts Heavy Rainfall in Tamil Nadu From Oct 12 to 15, Issues Orange Alert

The department has urged Fishermen to not venture into the sea, as squally weather with wind speed reaching 35kmph to 45kmph gusting to 55kmph is likely.

Chennai: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Chennai forecasted heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu from October 12 to 15 on Friday and issued an 'orange' alert for 10 districts including Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu - the ghats areas of Coimbatore and Tirupur for October 15. The orange alert raises concerns and denotes residents to be prepared. The warning comes as the northeast monsoon is all set to arrive soon.

October 12:

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over the Ghat areas of Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts of Tamilnadu; Nilgiris, Erode, Namakkal, Salem, Karur and Dindigul districts of Tamilnadu, Kerala and South Interior Karnataka on October 12.

The RMC in its bulletin said that a well-marked low-pressure area on October 10 over the east-central Arabian Sea off Goa and north Karnataka coasts moved northwestwards and lay over the east-central Arabian Sea off the Maharashtra coast on October 11 morning. Furthermore, the associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8km above mean sea level.

October 13:

For October 13, the weather department predicted heavy rain over the isolated regions of Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts of Tamilnadu and Nilgiris, Erode, Dindigul and Karur districts of Tamilnadu and Kerala .

October 14:

Meanwhile, heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur on October 14 over Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai and Nagapattinam districts of Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area, while, Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Chennai, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Pudukkottai districts of Tamilnadu. 

Weather Forecast For the Next Week:

For the next week, the RMC has predicted 'moderate to very heavy rainfall' in various parts. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall warning has been given to places over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts and over Ghat areas of Coimbatore and Tirupur districts; Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Madurai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram and Pudukkottai districts

However, Chennai will enjoy pleasant weather on Friday after days of heat. It will continue to be cloudy for the next couple of days. "
