The Indian Air Force (IAF) recently showcased its exceptional air-to-air refuelling capabilities during Exercise Bright Star 23, seamlessly refuelling aircraft from the Egyptian Air Force (EAF). In a remarkable display of aerial coordination, the IAF's IL-78 aerial refuelling (AAR) aircraft extended its support by refuelling EAF's Mig 29 M and Rafale fighter jets mid-flight. This exercise solidifies the burgeoning defence and aviation cooperation between India and Egypt.

Exercise Bright Star 23, hosted by Egypt, has brought together air forces from across the globe to engage in joint training and enhance interoperability. This exercise, conducted every two years, holds immense significance as it strengthens the participating nations' defence capabilities and fosters international cooperation.

IAF’s Art of Air-to-Air Refuelling

Air-to-air refuelling is a critical aspect of modern aerial operations, allowing fighter aircraft to extend their range, loiter time, and overall mission effectiveness. It involves a delicate ballet in the sky, where a tanker aircraft, equipped with specialised equipment, transfers fuel to receiver aircraft mid-flight. This enables the receiver aircraft to stay in the air for extended periods, cover greater distances, or execute complex missions that demand more fuel than they can carry internally.

The IAF has honed its air-to-air refuelling expertise over the years, becoming proficient in executing complex missions such as Ex Bright Star 23. The IL-78 tanker, a key asset in the IAF's arsenal, played a pivotal role in this exercise. It effectively demonstrated the IAF's ability to provide mid-air refuelling support to aircraft from partner nations, showcasing the force's commitment to international collaboration and interoperability.

Various formations in air-to-air refuelling

This is not the first instance of the IAF's IL-78 AAR aircraft demonstrating its prowess in air-to-air refuelling. Previously, the IL-78 has refuelled aircraft from the Egyptian Air Force, further strengthening the bond between the two nations. During air-to-air refuelling operations, several formations are utilised to ensure the safe and efficient transfer of fuel. Some common formations include:

  • Pre-contact Formation: In this setup, the receiver aircraft manoeuvres into position behind the tanker, aligning itself with the refuelling drogue or boom. This formation requires precise coordination between the tanker's boom operator and the pilot of the receiver aircraft.
  • Contract Formation: Once the receiver aircraft is in the correct position, it establishes contact with the refuelling drogue or boom. This is a critical phase where the boom operator ensures a secure connection between the two aircraft to initiate fuel transfer.
  • Post-contact Formation: After a successful connection is made, both aircraft maintain their relative positions to sustain the fuel transfer. The tanker crew continuously monitors the fuel flow rate and other parameters to ensure a controlled and safe operation.
  • Breakaway Formation: When refuelling is complete or in case of an emergency, the aircraft disengages from the refuelling configuration. This is done carefully to avoid any mishaps, and clear communication between the tanker and receiver aircraft is vital.

Enhancing global partnerships

Ex Bright Star 23 not only highlighted the IAF's air-to-air refuelling capabilities but also emphasised the importance of international cooperation in ensuring regional and global security. As nations come together to train and collaborate, they strengthen their collective defence posture, fostering peace and stability in an ever-changing world. The successful refuelling mission during Exercise Bright Star 23 serves as a testament to the IAF's professionalism, commitment to international partnerships, and ability to execute complex aerial operations with precision and finesse.
