Ballia (UP):  Demanding the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Kolkata Doctor rape-murder case, the mother of Nirbhaya (victim of the 2012 Delhi gang rape case) on Saturday said that Trinamool Congress chief is trying to mislead the public over the incident adding that she should have acted strongly against the culprits.

The 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. Students of her college and doctors in different parts of the country have been holding protests to seek justice for the victim.

Mamata Diverting People's Attention

“Instead of using her power to act against the culprits, the chief minister is trying to divert people’s attention by holding protests,” Asha Devi was quoted as saying to news agency PTI.

Asha Devi further criticised Mamata Banerjee saying that “instead of using her authority to take action” against the culprits, Mamata Banerjee is trying to mislead the public.

"Mamata Banerjee is protesting to divert people's attention from this issue. She herself is a woman. She should have taken strict action against the culprits while discharging her responsibility as the head of the state. She should resign because she has failed to handle the situation," she added.

Swift Punishment Needed

Asha Devi said until central and state governments get serious about seeking swift punishment from the court for rapists, such brutality will continue to take place in different parts of the country every day.

Banerjee led a protest rally from Moulali to Dorina Crossing in Kolkata on Friday, demanding justice for the woman doctor. She demanded that the culprits be hanged.

"When girls are not safe in Kolkata's medical college and such barbarity is committed against them, then one can understand the state of women's safety in the country," she said.

Mamata Holds Protests, Accuses BJP and CPM For Vandalism At Medical College

Earlier on Friday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed a rally where she urged the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to expedite the probe into the matter. At the rally, Banerjee accused the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of being responsible for the vandalism at the protest site at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the eve of the 78th Independence Day.

Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has declared a 24-hour withdrawal of services by all the modern medicine doctors of the country irrespective of the sector and place of work in response to nationwide outrage over the rape and murder of a second-year trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College.

While emergencies and casualties will function, the IMA said that OPDs or elective surgeries will be suspended from 6 am on Saturday till 6 am on Sunday, August 18, 2024.

On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, which led to nationwide strikes and protests by the medical fraternity.
