On the occasion of the 77th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi donned a multicoloured Rajasthani-style turban with a long tail when he arrived at the Raj Ghat to pay floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi before reaching the ramparts of Red Fort where he will hoist the national flag and address the nation.

PM Modi's multi-coloured turban was accompanied by his off-white kurta, white pants, and a jacket with a pocket square. Significantly, the turban goes with PM Modi's tradition of wearing colourful turbans on every Independence Day since 2014.

Last year, on 76th Independence Day, his turban colour was in sync with the colour of the national flag- a white turban with motifs of saffron and green. In 2021, PM Modi wore a saffron turban with red patterns. In 2020, he opted to wear a cream and saffron colour turban.

After paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat, PM Modi arrived at the Red Fort and was received by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt and Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane. The Defence Secretary introduced the General Officer Commanding (GoC), Delhi Area, Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth to the Prime Minister.

Later, the prime minister inspected the Guard of Honour and hoisted the national flag on Red Fort's ramparts synchronised with the 21-Gun Salute. As soon as the National Flag was unfurled by the Prime Minister, flower petals were showered at the venue by two Advanced Light Helicopters Mark-III Dhruv of the Indian Air Force in the Line Astern Formation.

Multi-layer security is in place across Delhi on Tuesday, with more than 10,000 personnel manning the area in and around the historic Red Fort from where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation on its 77th Independence Day, police said.
