New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined the nation in welcoming Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla as he returned to earth from historic space mission. Indian Air Force Group Captain and Astronaut, who will also be part of India's ambitious Gaganyaan Mission, was part of 4-member crew Axiom-4 mission to the international space station. The mission was supposed to be for two weeks, however, due to unfavourable weather conditions, their return was delayed by a few days. The Axiom-4 crew in total spent 18 days aboard the ISS during which they performed various experiments.

Congratulating and wishing Shubhanshu Shukla, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his X and said, “I join the nation in welcoming Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla as he returns to Earth from his historic mission to Space."

“As India’s first astronaut to have visited International Space Station, he has inspired a billion dreams through his dedication, courage and pioneering spirit. It marks another milestone towards our own Human Space Flight Mission - Gaganyaan,” the Prime Minister added.

Just a while ago, the International Space Station took to its X page and confirmed that the splashdown of Axiom-4 mission was successful off San Diego coast in California.

After initial check ups and completing the necessary protocols, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla and Axiom-4 crew were assisted out of the Dragon Spacecraft onto the recovery vehicle, after their return to earth from the International Space Station 18 days later.

On Monday, SpaceX's Dragon capsule undocked from the International Space Station carrying all four crew members. It took almost a day for the capsule before it attempted a successful splashdown.

After PM Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also wished Shubhanshu Shukla after the successful splashdown in San Diego, California.

Taking to X, Rajnath Singh said, “Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla’s successful return from the historic Axiom-4 mission is a proud moment for every Indian. He has not just touched space, he has lifted India’s aspirations to new heights.”

“His  journey to the International Space Station and back is not just a personal milestone, it is a proud stride for India’s growing space ambitions. Wishing him great success in his future endeavours,” the Defence Minister said.
