New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation at 8:30 PM tonight, a day after the Women’s Reservation Bill suffered a major setback in the Lok Sabha, triggering intense political debate.

The government has not disclosed the subject of the Prime Minister’s speech, but the timing, coming immediately after a dramatic parliamentary vote, has heightened anticipation across political circles.

Landmark Bill Falls Short

The 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill, which sought to introduce 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies from 2029, failed to secure the mandatory two-thirds majority.

Out of 489 MPs who participated, 278 voted in favour while 211 opposed it. The Bill required at least 352 votes to pass, leading to its rejection.

The proposed law also included a sweeping restructuring of representation, suggesting an increase in Lok Sabha seats from 543 to over 800 following a delimitation exercise based on the 2011 Census.

Rare Setback For Government

The defeat marks a significant moment for the Modi government, as it is the first time a Bill introduced during its tenure has failed to pass in the Lok Sabha.

Senior leaders, including Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, were present during the crucial vote.

Opposition parties have described the outcome as a political victory, while the government is expected to reassess its legislative strategy going forward.

Govt Puts Other Bills On Hold

In the immediate aftermath, the government requested Speaker Om Birla to defer consideration of two related legislations: the Delimitation Bill, 2026, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026.

The Lok Sabha was subsequently adjourned and the special session officially drew to a close on Saturday as both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned sine die.

All Eyes On PM’s Address

With the Bill’s failure and no immediate roadmap announced for its revival, political attention has now turned to the Prime Minister’s address scheduled for later tonight.

While the content of the speech remains undisclosed, it is expected to come against the backdrop of ongoing parliamentary debate and renewed focus on electoral reforms.
