Shahjahanpur rape case: Chinamayanand produced before court on Oct 3

Swami Chinmayanand will be produced before district court in Shahjahanpur through video conferencing on October 3. He has been accused of raping a law student.

Former BJP MP Swami Chinmayanand, who is currently under judicial custody, will be produced before the district court in Shahjahanpur through video conferencing on October 3. The BJP leader has been accused of raping a law student. A local court had sent the leader to judicial custody on September 20 for 14 days. Later on September 25, the law student who accused Chinmayanand was also arrested and sent to judicial custody for allegedly demanding extortion money. 

Court dismisses bail pleas of Chinmayanand and victim

The former Union Minister who was supposed to be present in court on October 1. But the date of his hearing got postponed to October 3 due to his late discharge from the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) hospital. After being discharged from the SGPGI hospital, he was sent to Shahjahanpur jail. On October 1, District Court Judge Ram Babu Sharma had reserved the order in the matter after hearing arguments from both sides and dismissed the bail pleas of Chinmayanand and the law student as well.

Swami Chinmayanand has been booked under section 376C of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), a charge short of rape, after the 23-year-old woman studying a college run by his ashram filed a complaint against him. Following a complaint by Chinmayanand's lawyer that she and three others had demanded Rs 5 crore from the leader, she was charged with extortion and arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and sent to a 14-day judicial custody.

What is the Chinmayanand rape case?

The woman had alleged that Chinmayanand sexually exploited her for a year after helping her with admission into his college. He allegedly filmed her taking a bath and blackmailed her with the video and raped her. The woman also alleged that she was raped multiple times and blackmailed by the leader. The case surfaced when she went missing on August 24 after putting up a Facebook post without naming Chinmayanand. When the UP police tracked her down after a week, the Supreme Court heard her allegations and ordered a Special Investigation Team to inquire into the case.
