Hyderabad: A 25-year-old software engineer died by suicide at her residence in Telangana allegedly due to dowry harassment by her husband. The incident occurred in Hyderabad, following which a case has been registered against the husband and a probe has been initiated. According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Devika, while her husband has been identified as Sharath Chandra.

According to Devika's family, she faced repeated physical and mental harassment for additional dowry. The couple had married six months ago in Goa, and Devika's family claimed that Sharath Chandra's demands for dowry began soon after the wedding. Devika's mother, Ramalakshmi, filed a police complaint, accusing her son-in-law of harassing her daughter for dowry.

The police stated that Devika ended her life by hanging herself at her residence in Prashanti Hills located in Raidurgam village on Sunday evening. Upon discovering her lifeless body, Sharath Chandra promptly alerted the police and Devika's family. Subsequently, Devika's mother, Ramalakshmi, filed a police complaint, alleging that her son-in-law had subjected her daughter to harassment over dowry demands.

Acting on the complaint, the Raidurgam police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Devika's demise. Her body has been shifted to Osmania Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The police are currently gathering evidence and statements to ascertain the precise sequence of events leading up to the tragic incident.

Notably, Devika's death occurs merely a day after another tragic incident in Telangana, where a first-year intermediate student from Medak district took her own life, reportedly due to exam-related stress. The student, who was enrolled in a private college in Hyderabad, had returned home for the Shivaratri festival. Due to her lack of interest in academics and anxiety over her forthcoming exams, her parents brought her back to Medak on February 1, intending to transfer her to another institution.

Devika's death is not an isolated incident. Dowry-related harassment and suicides are a growing concern in India. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 7,141 cases of dowry deaths were reported in 2020. This number has been steadily increasing over the years, highlighting the need for stricter laws and greater awareness about the issue.

The Telangana government must take immediate action to address the issue of dowry-related harassment and suicides. Stricter laws and penalties are needed to deter perpetrators, and greater awareness must be raised about the issue. The police must also ensure that cases are investigated thoroughly and perpetrators are brought to justice.

In a similar incident in 2020, a 23-year-old woman in Telangana died by suicide due to dowry harassment. The woman's family had paid a dowry of Rs 10 lakhs at the time of her marriage, but her husband and in-laws continued to demand more.
