Thane: 12-Year-Old Girl Pregnant After Alleged Rape, Probe Underway

Thane: In a distressing case from Thane district, Maharashtra, police have registered a case involving the rape of a 12-year-old girl who became pregnant. The situation came to light when the girl was admitted to a hospital for stomach pain and discovered to be expecting.

The young girl and her family, originally from Nepal, had moved to Thane seeking better employment opportunities. They were residing in a room at a construction site in Badlapur East.

According to police reports, the assault occurred in June when a man entered the family's room while the girl was alone. The man allegedly raped her and threatened to kill her if she reported the incident.

Out of fear for her safety, the girl remained silent. It was only after being hospitalised on July 19 for stomach ache that the pregnancy was detected. Following this revelation, the girl's mother reported the crime to the Badlapur police station.

A case has been filed under the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The police have launched an investigation into the matter.

In a separate incident, a 28-year-old man was arrested from Jogeshwari in Mumbai for allegedly raping a woman repeatedly and also forcing her to abort a pregnancy.

Riyasat Illias Qureshi befriended the 24-year-old victim and raped her several times between February 2022 and January this year on the promise of marriage, the Rabodi police station official said, adding the woman filed a complaint after the accused, who is a tailor, refused to marry her.
