New Delhi: The Tomato prices have surged up to Rs 90 per kilogram across the nation which is likely to impact millions of households. The prices of tomatoes, potatoes and green vegetables are likely to further increase in Delhi-NCR region as heatwaves and incessant rainfall have destroyed crops in the northern parts of India.

Why Sudden Rise in Vegetable Prices

In June, tomato prices were between 40 to 50 rupees per kilo, but they have now soared to 75 to 80 rupees per kilo and at some places it is being sold at Rs 90 per kg. Farmers have expressed their discontent regarding damage to their crops. Weather has played a significant role in spoiling the production.

In Moradabad region, farmers are disappointed over the crop damage related to tomatoes. Recent heavy rains in Moradabad have destroyed tomatoes in the fields. The region gets a supply of tomatoes from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi NCR, and Haryana

Farmers pleads Government Assistance

“We want some relief from the government,” one farmer was quoted as saying in an interview to news agency ANI.

Farmers further mentioned that they are not getting good prices for their tomatoes. They added that they are struggling to make even marginal profits. In recent months, the prices of vegetables have increased significantly.

Farmers are also complaining about lack of quality production as their produce was getting spoiled.

Retail prices for vegetables, eggs, and poultry meat also remain high in other parts of India. In Kolkata markets, tomato prices have soared to Rs 80-100 per kg from Rs 45-50 a month ago, while Brinjal is selling for Rs 110-140 per kg, a jump of nearly 150 per cent from early June.
