Mumbai: Baba Siddique, a senior leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), was shot dead in Bandra, Mumbai, on Saturday night. The politician, known for his influential role in Maharashtra politics, succumbed to his injuries after being shot multiple times by unidentified assailants.

Siddique, aged 66, served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Vandre West Vidhan Sabha Constituency and was a prominent figure in the state's political landscape. His political career began in the late 1970s when he joined the Indian National Congress (INC) as a teenager. 

He actively participated in various student movements, eventually rising through the ranks to become a key leader within the party.
He was elected as an MLA three times, in 1999, 2004, and 2009, and held several significant positions, including Minister of State for Food & Civil Supplies, Labour, and FDA from 2004 to 2008. 

He also served as a Municipal Corporator and was involved in various initiatives, including the establishment of an Eco-Garden in Bandra-Khar.

Siddique resigned from the INC in February 2024 and joined the NCP, led by Ajit Pawar . His sudden death has shocked the local political community and raised concerns about security and violence against politicians.

Authorities are investigating the shooting, with no suspects currently identified. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
