Earth’s rotation day: Here Are 10 Amazing Facts About the Earth
On this Earth’s rotation day 2024, here are 10 amazing facts about the Earth.
Earth’s rotation day is celebrated annually on January 8th in honor of Leon Foucault’s discovery of the earth’s rotation. In 1851, physician Leon Foucault demonstrated the earth’s rotation with the use of a pendulum, which was later prioritized over other experiments that were carried out to reveal the earth’s rotation around its axis. This day holds significant importance as people become more aware of Leon Foucault’s eye-opening discovery, which helped simplify the procedure of the earth’s very reason to rotate around its axis.
Here are some amazing facts about the earth:
1. Earth's gravity is not uniform: If Earth were a perfect sphere, it would’ve had a uniform gravitational field. Since Earth has never been perfectly round and is bumpy in nature, these variations change the pull of gravity, making Earth’s gravity uniform.
2. The earth is neither perfectly round nor flat: To the human eye, the earth seems perfectly round, but this may shock you because it is neither flat nor round in shape. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NAOO) states that as the earth spins around its axis, its gravity is pushed towards the center while the centrifugal force gets pushed out, resulting in a bit of a tiled shape.
3.Terrestial planet: Earth is composed of various silicate materials, like rocks and metals, and thus can be commonly referred to as a terrestrial planet. Other terrestrial planets on the list include Mercury, Venus, and Mars.
4. Earth is about 4.54 billion years old: By researching our planet’s rocks, scientists claim that the earth is about 4.54 billion years old, with an error range of 50 million years!
5. Only support systems in our solar system: Earth is the only planet known to support life due to the presence of oxygen and water that living creatures need to survive. Abundant in oxygen and surrounded by ample water, providing a suitable temperature for creatures to live on too.
6.Driest place on planet: Ironically, the driest place on earth is next to the Pacific Ocean, that is, the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. It is believed that Atacama’s Calama city has seen no rainfall in the last 400 years until a sudden storm in 1972.
7.Longer days: The days are getting longer on earth. The length of the day has increased from 6 hours to 21.9 hours in the span of 620 million years. The average day is 24 hours long, but it has been observed that it increases by 1.7 milliseconds every century.
8. The sun will eventually die: As and when the sun exhausts its supply of hydrogen gas, it will collapse under gravity. The earth’s will ultimately vaporize in the process as the sun undergoes a dramatic expansion, leading to a size that is 2000 times larger than the current one.
9. Earth is never still: It may seem like you are standing still on a platform, but the earth is constantly spinning fast. Where are you on the globe? So if you feel like you’re still moving along the planet at just over 1000 miles per hour,
10.Moon ‘QUACKS’: It may seem from a distance that the moon is inactive or rather dead. But infancy, our moon ‘quacks’ just like earth, keeping things just a bit shaken. The quacks on the moon aren’t intense or common and release seismic energy that is about 80 times
