New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has advised commuters to exercise “caution” over carrying liquor bottles in the metro network. Without specifying exact rules, DMRC said that commuters must remain aware of how many liquor bottles they can carry in the state they are traveling to.

How Much Alcohol is Allowed to Carry

According to the Excise Act, only one sealed bottle of liquor, such as rum, vodka, and whisky, can be carried from one state to another. Additionally, the legal drinking age varies between Delhi (25 years) and NCR towns like Gurugram (21 years).

"We are not specifying either one or two whatever number of bottles are permitted. Since we are operating in Delhi, UP and Haryana and whatever is the excise law of the state, it will prevail," DMRC Principal Executive Director Anuj Dayal was quoted as saying to news agency PTI.

Another DMRC official, Vikas Kumar said, "Whatever the Delhi government has authorised us is (permitted). The excise rules of the particular state prevail."

DMRC had allowed customers to carry Two bottles

In June last year, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) allowed commuters to carry two sealed liquor bottles per person in the Metro trains.

Delhi Government Objected to DMRC’s move

The Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government objected to DMRC allowing customers to carry liquor bottles. It stated that DMRC’s move will result in the loss to the state exchequer.

Delhi Metro trains ferry commuters between Delhi and NCR cities like Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon and Faridabad.
