Viral Story: Unveiling Turkmenistan's Eternal Flame: The Man Who Explored the 'Door to Hell'
Turkmenistan's natural gas crater, the "Door to Hell," continues to perplex. Explorer George Kourounis reflects on his daring descent, unveiling its mysteries.
In Turkmenistan, there is a natural gas crater that has put scientists, residents and the travelers across the globe in question for decades. The ‘Darvaza Crater’ also known as the “Door to Hell”.
Ignited in 1971, this fiery pit nestled in the Karakum Desert has transformed into a renowned tourist attraction, showcasing its unique geological marvel to global visitors. Despite numerous attempts to quell its flames, the crater stubbornly continues to burn, casting an otherworldly allure across the barren landscape.
George Kourounis, in a bold expedition in 2013, descended into the 230-foot-wide, 100-foot-deep pit, braving extreme conditions to gather gas readings and soil samples. National Geographic reported that Kourounis meticulously prepared for two years, gaining a mere 17 minutes at the crater's bottom. Encased in a heat-reflective suit and supported by ropes and a custom-made climbing harness, his descent provided a harrowing glimpse into the intensity of the "Door to Hell."
Reflecting on his experience, Kourounis shared, "That 17 minutes is etched pretty deep into my brain. It was so much scarier, so much hotter and bigger than I thought." Describing the sensation of dangling in the middle, he likened it to being a "piece of laundry on the line, drying out," emphasizing the constant awareness of the perilous environment.
This audacious expedition not only heightened global awareness of the mysterious crater but also yielded one of the most widely shared images on the internet – Kourounis within the fiery depths of the "Door to Hell."
The origin of this enigmatic crater remains uncertain, with various theories circulating for decades. One narrative suggests that engineers from the Soviet Union, drilling in the area during the 1960s, inadvertently created the crater when the earth crumbled beneath them. In an attempt to burn off the released methane gas, they lit a flame, expecting a swift conclusion. However, the blaze endures, enveloping the "Door to Hell" in perpetual mystery.
This blazing chasm has evolved beyond a scientific puzzle, becoming a lucrative tourist hotspot. Visitors from around the world are drawn to witness the mesmerizing inferno at the heart of the Karakum Desert, contributing significantly to Turkmenistan's revenue.
