Independence Day 2024: Theme
This year marks India’s 78th Independence Day, themed ‘Viksit Bharat’ or ‘Developed India’. The theme aligns with the government's vision of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047, the centennial of independence.
A brief history
The British East India Company arrived in India in the early 1600s, initially for trade. However, by the mid-18th century, it had established control following the Battle of Plassey in 1757. The British crown formally took over in 1858, instituting the British Raj after the Revolt of 1857, known as the First War of Indian Independence.
The Indian Independence Bill was introduced in the British Parliament on July 4, 1947, leading to the end of British rule on August 15, 1947. This historic day also saw the partition of British India into two nations—India and Pakistan—following negotiations between British officials and Indian leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
Patriotic celebrations
Independence Day is a national holiday marked by a variety of patriotic events. The main ceremony takes place at the Red Fort in Delhi, where the Prime Minister hoists the national flag, delivers a speech, and highlights the country’s progress and future plans. The day also features cultural activities, public ceremonies, and displays of national pride, celebrating India's journey from colonial rule to a sovereign, independent nation.
