When we talk about Christmas, the Christmas tree and Santa Claus are two things that are almost synonymous with the festival. Santa Claus, with his rosy cheeks, hearty laughter, and a bag full of gifts, is a symbol of the holiday season. He is a beloved character whose origins weave together historical tales and mythical folklore. How much of it is history and how much of it is myth? Let us find out.
Historical roots of Santa Claus
The story of Santa Claus traces back to a real historical figure, Saint Nicholas, a fourth-century Christian bishop from Myra (modern-day Turkey). Known for his generosity and compassion, St. Nicholas became the patron saint of children. His feast day, celebrated on December 6th, involved gift-giving and acts of charity.
In popular culture
The Dutch Sinterklaas tradition, brought to America by Dutch settlers, played a significant role in shaping the modern image of Santa Claus. Sinterklaas, depicted as a tall, bearded man in red robes, would reward good children with treats.
The imagery of Santa's workshop at the North Pole, accompanied by his team of reindeer, can be traced to 1823 with the publication of the poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" (also known as "The Night Before Christmas"). This poem by Clement Clarke Moore, popularised the idea of Santa's magical sleigh ride.
In the 1930s, the modern image of Santa Claus received a significant boost through Coca-Cola's marketing campaigns. Artist Haddon Sundblom created a series of illustrations featuring a plump, jolly Santa Claus enjoying Coke, solidifying the now-iconic image of Santa in a red suit with white fur trim.
The Santa folklore
Santa Claus goes by various names and takes different forms around the world. In France, he is Pere Noel, while in Italy, he is called Babbo Natale. In Nordic countries, the Yule Goat is a popular Christmas figure who may assist or compete with Santa Claus in gift-giving.
The magical aspects of Santa Claus, such as his ability to deliver presents to every child in the world in a single night, add excitement to the Christmas season. Kids hang their socks on the doors at night to receive gifts from Santa. Sometimes, they believe Santa will leave their presents under their decorated Christmas tree. The folklore surrounding Santa captures the imagination of kids and solidifies the spirit of generosity, kindness, and the joy of giving.
