India had their best-ever performance in the Asian Games in the 19th edition

The steady improvement in recent Asian Games competitions is proof of India's extraordinary progress in the sports globe. India has now crossed the amazing 60-medal benchmark three times, first in Guangzhou in 2010 and again in Jakarta in 2018. The Hangzhou edition marks the third time this has happened.

India started off their adventure with 51 medals at the first Games in 1951, but in the following seven editions, they had trouble breaking the 20-medal barrier. India did not make a substantial breakthrough until the 1982 competition, which also marked the return of the Games to Delhi, when it won 57 medals.

India created history in the 2006 Doha edition by winning more than 50 medals, a first for them in an international competition.

India has won an incredible total of 753 medals throughout the history of the Asian Games, including 183 gold, 239 silver, and 357 bronze. Athletics stands out as India's most successful sport overall in the Asian Games, winning an astounding 254 medals, including 85 gold. In the history of the Asian Games, India has won more than 100 medals in no other sport. The second-best sports, wrestling and shooting, each contributed significantly with 59 and 80 medals. India has already won around 30 medals in the discipline of athletics at the 2023 edition, demonstrating their continuous excellence in this sport.
