CWG 2022, Day 5 Highlights: India settle for badminton mixed team silver post final loss

With a best throw of 55.92m, Seema Punia had to settle for fifth in the women's discus throw final.

It was a spirited effort from Team India but they could only manage to win a silver medal after they came up against an utterly dominant Malaysian team, who won the gold.

Malaysia are on the verge of winning the gold in the mixed team event as they are just a game away.

With a total of 205kg in the women's 87kg final, Usha Bannur finishes sixth.

With a win over Ghana's Alfred Kotey, Rohit Tokas has advanced to the men's welterweight quarter-finals.

Kidambi Srikkanth's defeat in the men's singles meant that Malaysia now have a 2-1 lead in the mixed team badminton final.

After PV Sindhu tied the mixed team finals at 1-1, India are once again on the back foot as Kidambi Srikanth has lost his opening game.

After losing a nail-biting opening game, Kidambi Srikkanth was utterly dominant in the second game as he levelled the match at 1-1.

After the Indian men's doubles team lost their opening match, two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu levelled the finals by winning her match in straight games.

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu has taken a 1-0 lead in the second match of the Commonwealth Games 2022 mixed team finals by winning the first game. At the end of the first match, India trails 1-0.

Malaysia takes a 1-0 lead against India in the mixed team finals. The Malaysian team of Chia & Soh defeated the Indian duo of Rankireddy and Shetty 21-18 and 21-15. PV Sindhu is in action next.

Sunayna Kuruvilla has entered the women's singles plate squash finals after defeating Faiza Zafar of Pakistan in the semi-finals.

Saurav Ghosal has lost his semi-final match of the Men's Singles event against New Zealand's Paul Coll 3-0 to exit the race for the gold medal.

Vikas Thakur lifted 191kg in his second C&J attempt to win the silver medal for India in Men's 96kg weightlifting. Thakur lifted a combined weight of 346kg (155kg in snatch, 191kg in clean & jerk). Samoa's Don Opeloge won the gold medal, while Fiji's Taniela Tuisuva Rainibogi won the bronze medal. 

The Indian Men's table tennis team has defeated Singapore 3-1 to win a gold medal.

India won the third game of the ongoing Mixed team badminton event to take a 2-1 lead over Singapore. Sathiyan Gnanasekaran defeated Yew En Pang 3-1. 

Singapore has levelled the score against India to 1-1 after Sharath Kamal lost his singles match against Zhe Yu Chew 3-1 in the Mixed Team event.

Indian women's Fours team's win against South Africa was a story of perseverance. The athletes battled till the end and ensured India secured its fourth gold medal at CWG. 

The Indian team has defeated South Africa 17-10 to win a historic gold medal in the Women's Fours Lawn Bowls event at Commonwealth Games. 

The Indian team has taken a 15-10 lead over South Africa after End 14 of the Women's Fours Lawn Bowls final. 

The Indian team has taken 12-10 lead against South Africa after End 13 in the ongoing Women's Fours Lawn Bowls final. 

India's Harmeet Desai and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran beat Singapore's Yong Izaac Quek and Yew En Koen Pang 3-0 in their doubles match of the Mixed Team Final. Desai and Sathiyan won the game 11-13, 7-11, 5-11. 

The Indian team has levelled the score against South Africa to 10-10 after End 12 of the Women's Fours Lawn Bowls Final.

South Africa have taken a 10-8 lead over India after End 11 of Women's Fours Lawn Bowls Final at Commonwealth Games 2022. 

South Africa managed to level scores 8-8 against India in the Women's Fours Lawn Bowls final event after End 10.

The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM IST.

The score stands at 8-4 after End 8 in the ongoing Women's Fours Lawn Bowls final between India and South Africa.

India's Dutee Chand found herself placed at 4th in the Women's 100m - Round 1 Heat 5. She clocked a timing of 11.55s. The top three from each Heat qualify for the semi-final.

India bettered their lead by 8-2 against South Africa after the End 7 in the gold medal match for the Women's Fours Lawn Bowls event at the Birmingham CWG 2022.

The India men's team will face Singapore in the gold medal match for the men's team Table Tennis event at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

India's Advait Page and Kushagra Rawat have qualified for the Men's 1500m Freestyle final after finishing 7th and 8th overall in Heat 2. 

India took a 1-0 lead after End 1 in the ongoing gold medal match against South Africa and made a strong start. However, South Africa took a 2-1 lead after End 2. India went to level the scores by 2-2 after End 3.

The India Women's Lawn Bowls Fours Team's gold medal match against South Africa at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, is currently underway. 

Indian shot put player Manpreet Kaur advanced into the Women's Shot Put Final at the Birmingham 2022 CWG. She finished 4th in the Group B of the Qualifying round with a throw of 16.78m throw in her 3rd attempt.

The India women's Lawn Bowls ‘Fours’ team is up against South Africa in the gold medal match for the Women's Fours Lawn Bowls event. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:15 PM IST.

Indian weightlifter Punam Yadav fails to lift 116kg in her first attempt in the Clean and Jerk. She earlier lifted 98kg in snatch. 

Punam Yadav failed to lift 116kg in her first two attempts at Clean & Jerk during the Women's Weightlifting 76kg - Final. Although she lifted the weight in her 3rd attempt, she ended up releasing the weight before the buzzer and was disqualified.

Punam Yadav failed to lift 116kg in her 2nd Clean & Jerk attempt. She has one more attempt left.

India's women's triples lawn bowls team earned a 15-11 win against New Zealand in the the Round 1 of Women's Triples - Section C.

Indian shot put player Manpreet Kaur is currently competing in the qualifying round of the Women's Shot Put event. Manpreet registered a throw of 15.83m in her first attempt, before throwing 16.68m in her second. Manpreet made a throw of 16.78m in her 3rd attempt and currently finds herself at the third position in the Group B.

Indian athletes Muhammed Anees Yahiya and Murali Sreeshankar have advanced into the Men's Long Jump Final.

Punam Yadav successfully lifted 98kg in her 3rd attempt at snatch during the Women's Weightlifting 76kg Final and reached the 2nd spot on the table. She has registered 116kg as her first clean and jerk attempt.

After registering a jump of 7.49m in his first attempt during the Group B of Men's Long Jump - Qualifying Round, Muhammed Anees Yahiya registered 7.68m in his 2nd attempt. This took him to the top of the table, while he jumped to a distance of 7.49m in his 3rd attempt. However, with a jump of 7.83m in his 3rd attempt Guayana's Emanuel Archibald reclaimed the top spot.

Indian Weightlifter Punam Yadav failed to lift 95kg in her first snatch attempt during the ongoing Women's 76kg Final, but made a strong comeback in the 2nd attempt to lift the same weight.

Indian athlete Murali Sreeshankar registered a jump of 8.05m in the Group A of the Men's Long Jump - Qualifying Round and rose to the top of the table.

He also qualified for the final with the jump.

Mohammed Annes Yahiya and Murali Sreeshankar are currently competing in the Men's Long Jump - Qualifying Round.

Mohammed Annes Yahiya registered a jump of 7.49m in his first attempt in the Group B qualifying round.

Murali Sreeshankar's Group A qualifying round will begin soon.

Indian weightlifter Punam Yadav's women's 76kg final is currently underway. 

Here's the starting list for the event-

India takes an unassailable 2-0 lead over New Zealand in the Women’s Pair in Round 1. Whereas in the Women’s Triples, India are in the lead at this point in time.

The opening rounds of both the Women's Triples and Pairs of Section B & C between India and New Zealand is underway

Day 5 action will start with Women's Pairs Round 1 match between India and New Zealand at 1pm (IST).

Lawn Bowls means a sport in which the ball is rolled down in the long green stretch in order to place the ball closer to the target, which is called as ‘Jack.’ It consists of four formats – Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours. All the formats are named after the number of people in each team.

While India has been able to consistently finish on the podium in Asian and Asia-Pacific championships the team has not been able to deliver its best performance at the Commonwealth Games over the years. India has taken part in the 2010, 2014, and 2018 editions before the 2022 edition. The country has managed to reach the semi-finals just twice and has finished fourth on other occasions. After a bittersweet Day 4 at the Commonwealth Games, India is all set to play out more than five gold medal matches on Tuesday. It remains to be seen as to how many of those we can walk away with.

India's veteran judoka Shushila Devi clinched a hard-fought silver in the women's 48kg final, while weightlifter Harjinder Kaur and judoka Vijay Kumar Yadav won bronze each on Monday, taking the country's medal tally to 9. 

Australia continues to maintain the top position in the overall rankings at the end of Day 4, winning about 71 medals in total including 31 gold, 20 silver and 20 bronze. England has secured the second place with 54 medals including 21 gold while New Zealand ranks third with 24 medals. 

India continues to remain in the sixth position on the medals tally after winning its ninth medal on Day 4 of the Commonwealth Games 2022.

Sushila Devi opened India's account with a silver, followed by a bronze by Vijay Kumar Yadav in judo, only to be followed up by weightlifter Harjinder Kaur winning bronze, hence adding ninth medal to India's kitty.
