Manchester United's Latest Big Signing Termed 'Lightweight And Not Even Good' In Catching Review
Liverpool legend Graeme Souness held nothing back as he commented on the pursuit of Manchester United for Dutch centre-back Matthijs de Ligt.
Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt has all but completed his move to Manchester United from Bayern Munich for a reported fee of £42 Million.
De Ligt will become the second defender to join ‘The Red Devils’ this season following the signing of Leny Yoro. Liverpool legend Graeme Souness had a lot to say regarding De Ligt's move to United and he did not hold back in his criticism of the former Ajax captain.
“He’s a Lightweight Centre-Half”- Souness
While speaking to talkSPORT, Graeme Souness went off on Manchester United and De Ligt. He said, I’m doubtful about De Ligt. He didn’t get into the national team during the Euros, he was a squad member. He’s been at two enormous football clubs, they normally don’t like to sell players. That in itself tells a story. He was a star when he was a boy. Has he progressed since then? I’m not sure he is what Man United need at this time. Jonny Evans played 23 times for Man United, they desperately need a centre-half. I look at De Ligt, he’s a lightweight centre-half. What you want from a centre-half first and foremost is to defend."
Further on Souness added, "It would appear that some coaches and managers think it’s all about playing out from the back. Keep the ball out the back of the net. It’s the same with the goalkeeper. Is he any better than the Spanish boy they allowed to walk out the door? He wasn’t good with his feet but kept the ball out the back of his net better than Onana."
Souness remained unimpressed with De Ligt's physique and questioned why Man United were going after him.
New Adventure For De Ligt
Matthijs De Ligt will be reunited with his ex-manager Erik Ten Hag under whom he captained the Ajax side which reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019.
De Ligt then moved on to Juventus and from there to Bayern Munich. Having played in the Eredivisie, Serie A and Bundesliga, De Ligt will now play in the Premier League which some consider to be the toughest league to play in.
