Real Madrid now have two injured GKs
Kepa Arrizabalaga of Real Madrid will miss two to three weeks of action as a result of an injury he suffered during the team's pregame warm-up against Braga in the Champions League.
Kepa will miss the team's next games as a result of a thigh injury, according to a report from The Athletic. Kepa's hopes of making a permanent move to Real Madrid are further complicated by this absence, which coincides with important La Liga matches against Valencia and Cadiz. This injury has hindered his hopes of securing a permanent transfer; it happened after he signed on loan after Thibaut Courtois's ACL injury earlier in the season. In a prior interview with GOAL, Kepa had stated his objectives.
“We've started the season well and it's a long season, but we're on the right path. So, I'd say it has been a positive start, but I know any grade for my performances this season will be given at the end of the campaign. I said it then and I still hope to stay.”
Andriy Lunin is likely to start against Valencia
Wednesday's starting lineup saw Andriy Lunin in place of Kepa, who turned in a strong performance that included a penalty save in the 3-0 triumph. He's now ready to start in the match against Valencia as the starting goalie. In an interview with Real Madrid TV, Andriy Lunin expressed his happiness at playing for Real Madrid against Braga. Thinking back on the victory, he conveyed his satisfaction with his individual play as well as the team's outcome. Notably, he felt much more confident after maintaining a clean sheet and saving a penalty early on.
Considering that Lunin was added to the starting lineup at the last minute because of Kepa's injury, this was his third appearance of the season and his second clean sheet. After giving this encounter some thought, he said:
“The most important thing was to take the three points. We've qualified but we still have another two games to finish top of the group. This win will help us going into our LaLiga games. It's important for the team to get the win and keep a clean sheet. The final move of the game was very significant for me. I'm pleased to have played well and got the clean sheet. It's good for my confidence, my experience and to get a bit of match practice.”
“I'm fine, I'm at the best club in the world. The whole team helps me every day and I work alongside the best. It's not easy to step in at the last minute but you have to be ready. When you get the chance, you have to do what you know best. Fortunately, everything went my way.”
In order to take the top spot, Real Madrid will try to maximise their performance against Valencia by securing three points and hoping that Girona would drop their points.
