A fan ran onto the field in the 75th minute of Argentina's World Cup quarterfinal match against the Netherlands on Friday, just after Lionel Messi converted a penalty kick to give his side a 2-0 lead.

The spectator wore a light blue shirt that he started to take off when he was tackled by security. The game resumed after a short break. As it happened: Argentina beat Netherlands 4-3 in penalty shootout

Going ahead in the game, Wout Weghorst scored the opening goal for Netherlands, late in the game in the 83rd minute before equalling the scores with another goal at 90+11'. While the score stood at 2-2 after the extra time as well, the game went into the second penalty shootout of the day. 

Lionel Messi, Leandro Paredes, and Gonzalo Montiel found the back of the net in Argentina's first three attempts, whereas Teun Koopmeiners was the only Dutch player to score after three attempts. While Enzo Fernandez failed to convert for Argentina, Wout Weghorst's penalty goal took the score to 3-2. However, Lautaro Martinez scored in Argentina's final attempt to hand Argentina a 4-3 win in the shootout. 

What's next at the FIFA World Cup 2022?

Argentina advanced into the semifinal of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, where they will now face 2018 World Cup runners-up Croatia. The Croatian side beat Brazil by 4-2 in the penalty shootout earlier in the day to earn qualification.  Argentina and Croatia will now lock horns in the semis on December 14.

Meanwhile, the second and final day of the FIFA World Cup 2022 quarterfinals is set to feature two high-octane fixtures. The day will begin with Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal facing Morocco at the Al Thumama Stadium. In the final matchup of the quarterfinals, England will face defending World Cup champions France at the Al Bayt Stadium, eyeing qualification of the semifinal.
