As fourth edition of Khelo India University Games 2023 Ashtalakshmi began on Saturday, athletes from universities all over have descended upon rast to showcase ir skills and compete for national glory. Commencing with Kabdi matches in Guwahati, Happy Ganghas, Right Raider from Choudhary Bansi Lal University in Bhiwani, shared his thoughts on importance of Khelo India University Games, his passion for kabdi, his inspirations and future aspirations.
Happy Ganghas, reflecting on transformative impact of Khelo India initiative, said, “ Khelo India initiative has created so many opportunities for athletes. In fact, I began my competitive journey at Khelo India School Games that were held in Delhi.”
He furr highlighted Khelo India University Games’ tremendous value in talent identification. “This is a national platform and re are so many eyes on it, it is very hard for talent to go unticed here. As an athlete, you can make your future here.”
Ganghas, following in footsteps of his far, a former kabdi player for Border Security Forces who w serves as a coach for forces, shared how familial influence shaped his trajectory into sport. “My far inspired me to take up kabdi. With his background in sport, it felt like a natural progression for me.”
His passion ignited in seventh gre and was fueled by introduction of Pro Kabdi League’s emergence in 2014. “Seeing league inspired us and gave us something tangible to aim for,” he recalled, underscoring its motivational impact.
Pointing to Ajay Thakur, a stalwart of Indian kabdi as his beacon of inspiration, Ganghas revealed his ultimate dream: “To play in Pro Kabdi League and win World Cup for India like Ajay Thakur. I want to be like him t just on mat, but I mire his nature as well.”
Amidst ongoing tournament, Ganghas expressed his delight at camarerie among athletes from all over country. “It’s been an incredible experience so far,” he shared. “Meeting athletes from across India has been great, and tournament’s organization, hospitality, and quality of amenities have been commendable. Assam’s warmth and hospitality have me journey even more memorable.”
