Neeraj Chopra made history by becoming the first Indian athlete to capture a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships on Sunday. This exceptional accomplishment unfolded in the Men's javelin event, where Chopra secured the top accolade with an impressive throw of 88.17 meters. The competition, hosted in Budapest, Hungary, also witnessed several other Indian athletes qualify for the final but none of them were able to secure a medal.

India finish 18th on the medal table, USA on top
India wrapped up its campaign at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, securing a single gold medal and a joint 18th position in the overall medals table. The 19th edition of the championships, dubbed Budapest 23, took place from August 19 to 27.
Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Tokyo Olympics champion, emerged as the sole medalist for India, capturing a gold in the men's javelin throw event on Sunday. This achievement marked a historic milestone, as Chopra became the first Indian track and field athlete to attain the title of world champion.
The event marked India's third-ever medal in the World Athletics Championships. Prior to Chopra's success, Anju Bobby George secured a bronze in the long jump at Paris in 2003, and Neeraj previously clinched a silver at Oregon in 2022.

India's contigent for World Athletics Championships 2023
The Indian contingent, comprising 27 athletes, including 23 men and four women, participated in the championships. The list included some big names from India such as Avinash Sable, Jeswin Aldrin, Eldhose Paul, and Murali Sreeshankar.
