Google and Amazon have seemingly settled some of their differences. YouTube is finally coming back to Amazon Fire TV devices and Prime Video is coming back to Google Chromecast and Android TVs in the coming months, Google and Amazon announced in a joint statement on Thursday. Although details about what prompted the truce or what took them so long to get to it are scarce, it’s nice to see the two tech giants putting customer satisfaction above their long-running standoff.
It’s been a long time coming, the settlement. The feud between Google and Amazon has kept the native YouTube app off of Amazon’s Fire TV devices for well over a year – Chromecast and many Android TV users (with the exception of a few partner devices) similarly couldn’t access Prime Video. Although Google and Amazon aren’t giving out an exact time-frame, the official YouTube app will be available for Fire TV devices first, in the coming months – this will be followed by YouTube TV and YouTube Kids later this year.
“We are excited to work with Amazon to launch the official YouTube apps on Fire TV devices worldwide. Bringing our flagship YouTube experience to Amazon Fire TV gives our users even more ways to watch the videos and creators they love,” Heather Rivera who is global head of product partnerships at YouTube said.
Google’s Chromecast streaming dongle will similarly get native Amazon Prime Video integration – Prime Video will be also available universally on Android TVs.
“We’re excited to bring the Prime Video app to Chromecast and Android TV devices, and to give our customers convenient access to the shows and movies they love,” Andrew Bennett, who heads worldwide business development for Prime Video said.
Interestingly, the joint agreement does not mention the Echo Show which seems to suggest that it will be some more time before Amazon’s smart display gets native YouTube support. This means users of the Echo Show will have to make do with the built-in web browser to access YouTube until further announcement.
