Reliance Industries chairman and Asia's richest man, Mukesh Ambani called for a Jio-like revolution to make artificial intelligence more affordable and available to the masses. Speaking at the Nvidia AI Summit 2024 with Nvidia's founder and Chief Executive Officer, Jensen Huang, Ambani said, “For India and Indians, we have to repeat the Jio for the intelligence to be really affordable, available to the common people.” He added that the onus of setting up the infrastructure for “good quality AI” is on him and Huang, referring to the partnership announced last year for a joint effort to build India's own foundation large language model.

“It is important that we design and build infrastructure so that to use AI, our customers don’t have to change a phone, don't have to change their computers, but they can still get good quality AI. We take the burden of putting that infrastructure together,” said Ambani at the fireside chat with Huang at Mumbai’s Jio World Convention Centre.

Ambani highlighted that Reliance is working towards building AI locally so India does not have to rely on others. Reliance last year announced collaboration with Nvidia to develop the country's own foundation large language model (LLM) trained with various languages spoken in India. Both companies will also build an AI infrastructure in India. While he did not say where this will be built, Reliance Jio Infocomm is developing data centres in Gujarat 's Jamnagar, which the company said will also help it offer AI services.

“We are building infrastructure for one gigawatt, expandable to multiple gigawatts. We already have green power, so [we are] not dependent on anyone else,” he added.

Ambani said that “This is the reason that India will be one of the biggest intelligence markets, and it is not only our aspirations, but I think it is just the raw gene pool and the raw gene power that exists in India. The youth power that exists in India that is actually going to  drive intelligence. Hopefully, once we drive intelligence for our domestic market, we will use intelligent services beyond software to integrate with the rest of the world.”
