Nintendo has announced that its highly anticipated museum will open on October 2 in Uji, Kyoto, inside a refurbished factory from 1969. This museum marks a significant milestone for the gaming giant, showcasing its history from playing cards to gaming consoles. The announcement was accompanied by a video featuring Shigeru Miyamoto, the celebrated creator of Super Mario Bros, offering a glimpse into the museum’s exhibits.
What can you expect at the Nintendo's museum?
The Nintendo Museum promises an engaging experience with attractions such as vintage consoles, a giant interactive controller, and a shoot-em-up game featuring Super Mario characters. Additionally, visitors can explore displays of early Nintendo gaming systems and a unique exhibit on ancient Japanese poems. The museum aims to highlight Nintendo's dedication to innovation and playfulness.
Initially slated to open earlier this year, the museum’s launch was postponed. This new venture follows the debut of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan in March 2021, which features a Mario Kart ride and Bowser's Castle. Nintendo’s expansion into these interactive experiences is part of its broader strategy to diversify revenue streams.
Nintendo's initial days
Nintendo began as a manufacturer of traditional Japanese "hanafuda" playing cards in 1889, before venturing into video games with the TV Game 15 and TV Game 6 in 1977. The release of Super Mario Bros in 1985, following the introduction of the Nintendo Entertainment System, marked a significant milestone in gaming history.
Tickets for the museum are now available, priced at 3,300 yen ($22.60) for adults, with reduced rates for children. The museum aims to offer fans and visitors a deep dive into Nintendo’s rich legacy and innovation in gaming.
