What’s Driving Indian Army’s New Anti-Tank ‘Killer’ Upgrade?
The Indian Army is set to boost its anti-tank capabilities with an extensive upgrade, placing new orders for 2,408 Nag Mk-2 missiles, 107 NAMICA Mk-2 launch vehicles, and US-made Javelin missiles. Developed by DRDO and produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited, the Nag Mk-2 and NAMICA Mk-2 have cleared successful field trials at Pokhran. These advanced, fire-and-forget missiles feature imaging infrared seekers and tandem HEAT warheads, capable of destroying heavily armoured tanks.
In addition, India will procure Javelin missiles from the US under an emergency plan to bolster defences along the China and Pakistan borders. This hybrid approach — blending indigenous innovation with proven foreign systems — enhances India’s battlefield readiness while reinforcing the Make in India vision.
