Will India Confront Iran and Join Hormuz Multinational Force?

The Hormuz Multinational Force is a UAE-backed maritime coalition designed to secure freedom of navigation through the critical Strait of Hormuz. With recent geopolitical escalations, naval mine deployments, and tit-for-tat blockades severely restricting global oil transit, this task force aims to deter hostile actions and escort commercial vessels. For India, the situation presents a massive diplomatic tightrope. New Delhi relies heavily on the strait for its energy security and trade but maintains a complex, historic relationship with Tehran. Iran expects friendly nations to reject Western military frameworks in its territorial waters. Consequently, joining a US-led multinational fleet risks severely antagonizing Iran and jeopardizing India's strategic investments like the Chabahar Port. Instead of joining formal Western coalitions, New Delhi traditionally favors independent naval operations to protect its flagged vessels, projecting strategic autonomy while safeguarding its critical economic interests in the volatile Persian Gulf without taking sides.
