Video: Will Delhi Survive Pollution If Aravalli Hills Are Lost to Mining?
Despite BS6 standards and GRAP initiatives, Delhi's pollution problem is still getting worse, with AQI levels often exceeding dangerous thresholds. Concern has been heightened by the Supreme Court's recent decision to redefine the Aravalli Hills, which could result in the loss of legal protection for approximately 90% of the smaller hills and ridges. These hills have long served as organic barriers, allowing rainwater to penetrate into the ground, slowing arid breezes, and minimizing dust movement.
Delhi confronts the possibility of increased dust input, decreased groundwater recharge, and worsened pollution conditions due to their compromised protection. As its natural defenses deteriorate, the capital—which already faces severe winter pollution—runs the risk of experiencing a more serious environmental crisis.
