Sheikh Hasina Death Verdict: Son Warns of Turmoil as Dhaka Pushes for Extradition
Sajeeb Wazed, son of ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has sharply condemned his mother’s death sentence, calling it politically motivated and unconstitutional. He accused the interim administration of influencing the court proceedings and maintained that Bangladesh’s request for her extradition is unlawful due to the lack of proper legal procedure. While Wazed thanked India for protecting Hasina during last year’s political upheaval, he was firm in rejecting Dhaka’s extradition demand. New Delhi’s silence has further deepened the uncertainty surrounding Hasina’s fate.
Wazed has earlier cautioned that excluding the Awami League from the electoral process could provoke renewed protests and violence. The International Crimes Tribunal convicted Hasina of crimes against humanity for allegedly ordering violence and deadly force during the 2024 student protests, sentencing her to death. As Hasina remains in exile, a crucial question persists: will she ever risk returning to Bangladesh?
