PM Modi’s Bhutan Visit Strengthens Historic Ties as China Keeps Watch
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bhutan marked a key milestone in India-Bhutan relations, reaffirming India’s position as the Himalayan nation’s most trusted partner in development and security. During the trip, PM Modi announced a ₹4,000 crore concessional line of credit to boost Bhutan’s infrastructure and energy initiatives. The inauguration of the Punatsangchhu-II hydroelectric project, adding over 1,000 MW to Bhutan’s capacity, reflected India’s enduring commitment to Bhutan’s progress.
Beyond energy cooperation, discussions also advanced plans for new railway links connecting Bhutanese towns to India’s rail network, expanding trade and strengthening economic ties. The visit underscored why Bhutan continues to prefer India’s transparent and dependable partnership over China’s uncertain outreach. As Beijing watches closely, Bhutan remains cautious of China’s debt-driven diplomacy and territorial disputes like Doklam. PM Modi’s visit reaffirmed that Bhutan’s growth and stability are deeply anchored in its historic and trusted relationship with India.
