Hyderabad: A recent post on Reddit has garnered significant attention, highlighting linguistic chauvinism in various parts of the country. A Hyderabad resident shared his disapproval of his flatmates' decision to terminate their house help due to her inability to communicate in Hindi. The Reddit user sought to know if others had faced similar experiences.

The post read: "I live in a 3BHK with two other flatmates who can't speak Telugu. They moved in two months ago. We have a Telugu-speaking maid who excels in cleaning, outperforming most maids in our area. She's been working in the flat for 1.5 years. Now, my flatmates want to replace her solely because she can't speak Hindi, despite understanding the language and my presence to translate when needed."

The user added that the house help was visibly upset, shedding tears upon learning the reason for her termination.

What happens in Bengaluru today will definitely go to Hyderabad tomorrow 🙂

Internet's Reaction

The Post has sparked a discussion in the platform and gained significant engagement. The post has 530 upvotes and numerous comments.

A user shared his experience by commenting: ‘’This is happening with companies also. I myself have witnessed this first hand where a hindi HR guy tampered with the hiring process so much. He literally rejected all local candidates with merit and accepted all illiterate hindi candidates who had no relevant experience at all. I was the hiring manager hence took control of the process later on. But i was amazed to see the guts of this HR''

Another user shared: ‘’In the era of Internet and Google Translate, how is this even happening? When I visited Japan, I used Google translate to get around, as barely any people speak English there. Japanese people would even translate from Japanese to English to communicate back. These people are not even putting in any effort to use tools which can help you communicate, forget about learning a bit of the regional language".

Another comment read: “I had kannadiga maid and I couldn’t understand anything in the beginning(there were no Bangladeshi maids in early 2000) but I think it is not super complicated as she was not doing rocket science. On the bright side, she was the first one to help me and my roommates understand Kannada.”
