Viral Video: 7-Foot Python Rescued from Fishing Net by Wildlife Officials in Karnataka's Agumbe
Wildlife officials rescued a 7-foot python trapped in a fishing net in Agumbe, Karnataka, and safely released it into the wild.
Karnataka: In a tense yet successful operation, wildlife officials in Karnataka’s Agumbe rescued a 7-foot-long python that had entangled itself in a fishing net on the banks of a river. The dramatic rescue, which was captured on video and shared on Instagram by Ajay Giri, the field director at Agumbe Rainforest Research Station (ARRS), showcased the challenges faced by both the snake and its rescuers.
The python was first spotted by locals, who noticed the large reptile lying motionless in the water, its body tightly wrapped in the fishing net. Understanding the urgency of the situation, the villagers quickly alerted the forest department, who in turn contacted the experts at ARRS for assistance.
Upon arrival, ARRS officials carefully assessed the situation and determined that the python had likely consumed "something big," as its stomach appeared unusually swollen. Using a restraining tube and scissors, the team painstakingly freed the snake from the net, ensuring the animal's safety throughout the process.

“After inspection, we realised that the snake had consumed something big. The snake was gently removed from the net with the help of a restraining tube and scissors. It was gently bagged,” Giri said in his post.
Once freed, the python was safely released back into its natural habitat, where it swiftly disappeared into the forest. “The best part was the snake didn’t regurgitate its meal,” Giri added, highlighting the success of the mission.
Following the rescue, the ARRS team conducted an educational outreach program for the local community, distributing informative materials to raise awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation and safety.
This rescue comes just weeks after another remarkable operation led by Giri and his team, where they safely relocate a 12-foot-long King Cobra that had taken shelter in a bush within a residential compound in Agumbe. That video quickly gained viral attention online, further showcasing the expertise and dedication of the ARRS team in handling such encounters with India's incredible wildlife.
