Japan Earthquake News: A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Kyushu, an island in southern Japan, on Thursday, prompting a tsunami warning for waves up to 1 meter high. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake's epicentre was situated 20 kilometres northeast of Nichinan, with a depth of 25 kilometres.
The earthquake in Japan was initially measured at 6.9 on the Richter Scale, but Japan's meteorological agency updated the magnitude to 7.1 later. No casualties or loss of property have been reported yet.
JAPAN EARTHQUAKE: TSUNAMI WARNING ISSUED
As a precautionary measure, authorities have issued advisories for a potential one-meter-high tsunami along the Pacific coast of the western islands of Kyushu and Shikoku, according to NHK. In Miyazaki Prefecture on Kyushu, 20-centimetre waves have already been observed, as reported by the news agency NHK.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) people have shared several videos of Japan earthquake news on social media videos capturing the chaotic scene as people sought cover while objects inside a shopping mall and a bowling alley swayed dramatically during the Japan earthquake.
