Dhaka: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister and Opposition leader Khaleda Zia has walked out of jail nearly after 6 years on Tuesday after embattled Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country on Monday after a month-long student protest over reservations in government jobs leading to a situation of anarchy and unrest.
One of the significant outcomes of the meeting meeting with leaders of various political parties and civil society representatives at Bangabhaban, in the presence of the chiefs of the three armed forces, was the order for the release of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who has been under house arrest following multiple convictions.
This decision was confirmed by the Dhaka Tribune, which also noted the president's directive to release all students detained during the recent protests.
The political landscape of Bangladesh took a dramatic turn as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina abruptly resigned and left the country on a military aircraft. In her absence, the army has stepped in to manage the power vacuum, leading to significant unrest.
As news of Hasina’s departure spread, hundreds of protesters stormed her residence, causing extensive damage and looting, reflecting the intense anti-government sentiment that has resulted in over 300 deaths in the past two weeks.
In response to the chaos, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the army's media wing, announced the imposition of a curfew from 12:00 am to 6:00 am on Tuesday. Army Chief General Wakar-Uz-Zaman is scheduled to meet with representatives of students and teachers to address their concerns, according to an ISPR statement.
Khaleda Zia, the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Political opponent of Sheikh Hasina, was serving a 17-year sentence in various corruption cases. Khaleda Zia first became the Prime Minister in 1991 and served in office till 1996.
