Trump Threatens To Stop Federal Funding To Colleges, Schools Allowing Illegal Protests, Warns Students
Trump declared that American students involved in protests will face "permanent expulsion" or "arrest."
New Delhi: In his ongoing campaign to reduce government spending since beginning his third term, President Donald Trump in a new statement declared that any college, school, or university that allows illegal protests on their campuses will no longer receive federal funding.
Trump’s Stern Warning Against Protests
In a direct message to educational institutions, Trump warned, "All Federal Funding will STOP for any college, school, or university that allows illegal protests. Agitators will be imprisoned or permanently sent back to the country from which they came. American students involved in protests will face permanent expulsion or, depending on the severity of their actions, arrest.”
He further emphasized his opposition to masks being worn on campuses, stating, “NO MASKS!”
Past Actions Reflect Trump’s Focus on Cutting Foreign Assistance
Trump's stance on cutting spending is not a new development. Earlier, he implemented a 90-day freeze on foreign assistance, which has since resulted in the shutdown of numerous programs globally, particularly affecting humanitarian and development work.
Trump’s administration has cited the need for a review of U.S. foreign assistance to ensure that funds are spent in a way that strengthens U.S. security and prosperity.
Trump's Crackdown on Foreign Assistance Continues
Trump’s decision to freeze foreign assistance has had profound effects on countries worldwide, particularly in regions like Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, where U.S. aid plays a critical role in addressing humanitarian crises.
Programs that assist HIV patients, migrants, and LGBTQ+ youth have all been affected.
The U.S. spends around $40 billion annually on foreign aid, a significant portion of which has been redirected or frozen under Trump’s orders.
While some Americans support his stance on reducing foreign assistance, polls indicate that the majority of the public believes the U.S. is spending too much on foreign aid, while domestic needs such as healthcare and infrastructure remain underfunded.
Musk’s Push to Eliminate USAID
In another move to tighten control over U.S. spending, Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been working alongside the Trump administration to eliminate programs deemed ineffective, with USAID being one of the prime targets.
Musk has accused USAID of using its funds for harmful programs, calling it a “criminal organization.”
