Argentine President Alberto Fernandez on Sunday paid homage to the dozens who were killed 20 years ago when riots erupted after people took to the streets over the country's economic crisis.
In a ceremony at the Casa Rosada, authorities read aloud the names of the 39 people killed, some of whom were minors, when the state ordered a crackdown against the street demonstrations, as relatives held photos of their loved ones.
During Sunday's ceremony, a group of children, relatives of the victims, joined Fernandez in unveiling a commemorative plaque at the front door of the Government House.
Protests spread all over Argentina on the 19th and 20th of December 2001 after a series of economic policies from the central government sparked the rage of citizens who suddenly saw their savings partly confiscated from their bank accounts.
Then President Fernando de la Rua was forced to step down from office, starting a political crisis that included his resignation and the swearing in of four consequent presidents in 11 days.
