An alarmed Pentagon reveals that China now has more than 500 nukes
The Defense Department's annual China Military Power Report has revealed that China has surpassed previous estimates for the size of its nuclear stockpile.
In a recent report, the Pentagon issued a stark warning regarding China's rapid expansion of its nuclear arsenal and naval forces. The Defense Department's annual China Military Power Report revealed that China had surpassed previous estimates for the size of its nuclear stockpile, with more than 500 nuclear warheads as of May, marking an increase of approximately 100 warheads compared to the previous year.
Even more concerning is the Pentagon's projection that China may double its nuclear warhead count to over 1,000 by 2030. The report emphasized that the growth in China's nuclear capabilities shows no signs of slowing down, raising concerns about the global security landscape. This revelation comes at a time when the Biden administration is gearing up for a potential face-to-face meeting between President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in California next month. Although diplomatic efforts are underway, tensions between the two nations remain high.
China “on track to exceed previous projections”
A senior Department of Defense official explained to Politico that the recent assessments indicate China's nuclear arsenal is progressing "on track to exceed previous projections." However, specific figures were not disclosed. Last year, the Pentagon estimated that China might possess 1,000 nuclear warheads by 2030 and 1,500 by 2035.
The official highlighted the significant differences in China's nuclear pursuits compared to a decade ago, emphasizing the scale and complexity of their efforts. China is not only expanding its nuclear delivery platforms on land, at sea, and in the air but is also investing in the required infrastructure to support this substantial expansion of its nuclear forces.
What else does the report mention?
The report also mentioned that China is likely to use its new "fast breeder" reactors and reprocessing facilities for producing plutonium, even though Chinese officials publicly state that these facilities are meant for peaceful purposes. Additionally, the report revealed that China likely completed the construction of three new fields for solid-fueled missile silos in 2022, including at least 300 new intercontinental ballistic missile silos. Some of these silos have already been loaded with ICBMs.
China's growing arsenal, although smaller than US and Russia, is concerning
It's important to note that while China's nuclear stockpile is growing, it remains considerably smaller than those of Russia and the United States. As of January, Russia possessed 5,889 nuclear warheads, and the United States had 5,244, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. Nonetheless, China has refrained from engaging in arms control talks with Russia and the United States, arguing that their arsenals are substantially larger than its own.
The alarming growth in China's nuclear capabilities underscores the pressing need for diplomatic efforts and international discussions to ensure global stability in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
