Controversial victim-blaming lesson on sexual harassment in Chinese school sparks outrage

In a southern Chinese middle school, a seemingly innocuous "mental health education" class has ignited a fiery online discourse about victim-blaming and the inadequate response from authorities. The incident occurred at a school in Zhaoqing city, situated in Guangdong province. While the class was conducted last year, it wasn't until recently that photos of the teaching materials began circulating online, sparking a storm of outrage and shedding light on deeply entrenched gender inequalities.

The crux of the controversy rests upon papers distributed during the class, which suggested that victims of sexual harassment suffer due to their choice of attire and behavior. The documents notably claimed that victims often endure such experiences because they "dress flamboyantly and behave flirtatiously." Additionally, they advised girls against wearing transparent or revealing clothes and encouraged them to avoid behaviors deemed frivolous, as per a report from CNN news.

Feminists on social media aren't happy

The ensuing backlash on social media was swift and intense. Critics condemned the conservative mindset perpetuated by the teaching materials and lamented the victim-blaming narrative that emerged. Many pointed out that such notions only perpetuate gender inequality and fail to address the core issue of harassment.

Online platforms, particularly the Chinese social media giant Weibo, became forums for discussions that ranged from outrage to calls for reform. One comment garnered significant attention, asserting that the teacher responsible for the class bore significant responsibility for the problematic content.

In response to the public outcry, local education authorities issued a statement last week acknowledging that the controversial lecture had taken place in April of the previous year. The statement, however, claimed that some of the expressions had been "inappropriate" and had led to "misunderstanding" among online users.

This official response did little to assuage the anger of critics, who saw the statement as downplaying the gravity of the issue. Many argued that the choice of words, particularly "misunderstanding," failed to address the heart of the problem. Instead, they maintained, the materials exposed pervasive societal beliefs and warranted a more substantial response.

This incident has once again brought to the forefront the ongoing struggle to dismantle harmful stereotypes and promote a culture of equality and respect in the realm of education. As the discussions continue to unfold online and beyond, many are left wondering if this controversy will be the catalyst for meaningful change or merely another chapter in a persistent battle for gender justice.
