Tourist dies after plunging 764ft from world's highest bungee jump in China
After completing his bungee jumping from the 338m-high Macau Tower, man suffered shortness of breath.
In a harrowing incident, a 56-year old Japanese tourist died after plunging 764 feet from the world’s tallest bungee jumping spot at the Macau Tower in China on Sunday, December 4. The man, in his late 50s, complained of shortness of breath after jumping from the tower, and he was rushed to the Conde S. Januário Hospital in Macau, off the country's south coast. He was pronounced dead later, and an investigation was launched into the incident. The Macau tower is the second-highest in the world, trailing behind the Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge Bungee located in China.
The tourist was undertaking the adventurous activity at Skypark by AJ Hackett that offers a bungee jump from the high rise building for the price of 2,888 MOP (around Rs 29,607) per shot. The company offers the bungee jumping in foreign countries including France, Singapore and Australia.
Firm claims 4 million ‘safe' jumps
According to the company’s website, an individual is offered to jump off from whopping 47m height, and using a guide cable system, they are expected to safely land onto a specially designed airbag. The firm claims to have conducted an estimated four million jumps over the span of 30 years, in what it calls the ‘perfect safety record’. The company -- on its website – mandates the clients to disclose any medical conditions that they suffer from before taking part in the adventurous activity. This includes any heart conditions, cardiac issues, high blood pressure, diabetes or any surgery.
After completing his bungee jumping from the 338m-high Macau Tower on Sunday at around 4.30pm local time, the Japanese tourist suffered from shortness of breath after which he was rushed to the Conde S. Januario Hospital for emergency treatment, Hong Kong news outlet HK01 reported, adding that despite doctors' efforts, Januario could not be saved. The paramedics reportedly said that upon their arrival, Januario was found in a state of asystole and could not breathe. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. The tourist had no superficial injuries or any sustained injury from the sport, doctors reportedly said, adding that he had lapsed into unconsciousness and had no heartbeat after completing the jump.
