Over 200 Cuban doctors landed in South Africa early on Monday to assist the country in its fight against COVID-19.
They were welcomed by various cabinet ministers, the Cuban ambassador and Cubans living in South Africa.
"We thank each and every one of the Cuban health professionals who are part of this team for their personal commitment and sacrifice in order to assist South Africa's efforts to curb COVID-19," said Naledi Pandor, South Africa's Minister of International Relations and Cooperation.
Members of the medical brigade include Cuban family physicians, epidemiologists, biologists, healthcare technology experts, engineering experts, biotechnology experts and other specialists.
This team will be put in a precautionary quarantine for the next 14 days.
They will use this time to gain an understanding of the current situation in South Africa and the provinces they will be deployed to.
According to the John Hopkins University, South Africa has recorded over 4,500 COVID-19 cases and 87 deaths. Cuba has confirmed over 1,300 cases and 54 deaths.
For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, that clear up in two to three weeks.
For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and could lead to death.
