Japan: Xiao Chenghao, a Chinese TV host from Hainan Broadcasting Group, faced suspension after posting a video on New Year's Day that made insensitive remarks about the deadly earthquake that struck Japan. The 7.4-magnitude earthquake, which claimed over 40 lives, prompted a controversial response from Xiao Chenghao.
In the video titled "A comeuppance arrived? A 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit Japan," Xiao Chenghao expressed surprise at the natural disaster occurring on the first day of 2024. His comments took a critical turn, suggesting that Japan's misfortunes might persist throughout the year due to the earthquake. He even made a controversial reference to Japan discharging nuclear water into the sea.
Xiao Chenghao suspended
The video quickly went viral on Chinese social media, drawing significant backlash for its insensitivity and inappropriate nature. The Hainan Broadcasting Group responded by suspending Xiao Chenghao, citing his "inappropriate comments" in an official statement, as reported by the South China Morning Post.
However, Xiao Chenghao has yet to issue an apology for his controversial remarks.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang expresses condolences
Notably, Chinese Premier Li Qiang expressed condolences on behalf of Beijing to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, acknowledging the severity of the earthquake tragedy. Li Qiang conveyed China's willingness to provide necessary assistance to Japan's earthquake relief efforts, emphasizing solidarity in times of crisis.
Japan disastrous earthquake
The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.5, struck the Noto Peninsula and surrounding areas in central Japan, causing significant damage, fires, and claiming numerous lives. The aftermath includes structural damage and the risk of mudslides, further complicating relief efforts in the affected regions.
